Experimental Investigation of the Dynamics of the BTA Deep Hole Drilling Process*

Deep hole drilling methods are used for drilling holes with a high length-to-diameter ratio, good surface finish and straightness. Due to the slender tool-boring bar combination needed for producing holes with a high length-to-diameter ratio, the process is susceptible to dynamic disturbances. These disturbances can be classified as chatter vibration or spiralling. The work presented in this paper is part of a project with the aim of analyzing and modeling the dynamics of the process for improving workpiece quality and process reliability. For this purpose, statistical methods and neural networks are applied to process data. An experimental setup for observing the dynamics of the BTA deep-hole drilling process is presented. Time series of different process quantities have been recorded. First results are presented by exemplary discussion of tool acceleration data.
